I picked up this beauty bar on the recommendation of Ailish Lucas from The Glow Getter. She raves about Skin Owl products and how they’ve fixed her hormonal acne, so when I was recently looking for a cleanser that was plastic free I decided to have a browse of these. Ailish swears by the Matcha Tea & Cocoa Butter Beauty Bar, but after looking at the range I decided to go for the Peppermint & Charcoal Beauty Bar as I thought that sounded like it would suit my skin better. Just for reference I have combination skin; dry nose, oily forehead and a blemish prone chin.
Skin Owl was founded by Annie Tevelin after she struggled to find any products or treatments to help with her cystic acne. It was then that she started to look at the ingredients in the products she was using and she decided to study at UCLA and received a certificate in Cosmetic Chemistry. With her new knowledge she found out what ingredients were best for the skin and started to formulate her products. With Skin Owl, Annie wanted women to feel as good as they looked, to educate women about their skin and deliver the best products.
I chose the Beauty Bar Kit, as I loved that it came with a tray and smaller version of the bar. The smaller bar is perfect for travelling and I’ve used this a few times on weekends away already – it’s the perfect size! The Peppermint & Charcoal bar is aimed at people with combination skin that are prone to acne. It has Charcoal to purify the skin without stripping any oils and also includes lavender, eucalyptus, cedarwood, tea tree and peppermint to calm and clarify the skin. I imagine this would be perfect for teenagers who have problematic skin. The bar itself is pretty big too. Well, I suppose it’s the same as a normal bar of soap but as you only use this on your face it lasts aaaaaaages!
I’ve been using this for a good few weeks now and finally thought it was time to let you all know what I thought. In short, I really love it. I saw results after the first week of use and my blemishes got much better. I only tend to use this at night after I’ve removed my make up, but I might start adding it into my morning routine too as my skin has been extra problematic at the minute! I was a little sceptical at first, as soap bars are usually very drying on the skin and I didn’t want my skin to be left feeling parched. I needn’t have worried though because it isn’t drying on the face at all! My skin doesn’t feel stripped or tight after use. It feels clean but nourished, which is really rare for a soap bar, and creates a great base for the rest of my skincare routine. It’s also great that it has no plastic packaging and everything can be re-used (the tray) or recycled (the cardboard packaging and paper wrap) – great for someone who is looking to minimise their plastic consumption.
I love this product and would greatly recommend it for anyone with combination, blemish prone skin. They do have 3 other versions of the beauty bar too, so if you don’t have combination skin then maybe one of the other bars would suit you better. I’d really like to try some of Skin Owl’s other products now – the Beauty Whip looks so nice and I think that will be the next thing I pick up 🙂
