Natural deodorants are a love/hate product in the green beauty world. Some people love them and have found their holy grail. Others have tried a thousand and just can’t get them to work. I sit firmly in the middle bracket – I’ve found a couple that sort of work but not one I’m completely happy with. With that in mind when I saw Louise’s (prettypolly_beauty) post on Instagram about Native Unearthed’s Deodorants it piqued my interest. I’ve not tried a pot of deodorant before, as it just seems pretty messy, but I thought it might be time!
Native Unearthed was created because the founders couldn’t find a natural deodorant that did the job. They set out to curate a clean range of deodorants that really worked, but didn’t include any nasties. They believe that ‘if you won’t put it in you, we won’t put it on you’, so their ingredients are all pure and simple. They are cruelty free and also use no animal derived ingredients.
I went for the Native Unearthed Coconut & Vanilla Natural Deodorant Balm because I love vanilla and coconut(!). It does include bicarbonate of soda to neutralise odour, so if you prefer to not have that in your deodorant you may want to stay away from this one. It also includes arrow root to absorb moisture, shea butter to moisturise and soothe, coconut oil to nourish and vanilla essential oil for a nice aroma. I must admit that I expected a stronger smell from this, as it’s a very subtle vanilla scent. I do like the scent though and since using this I’ve come around to thinking that perhaps a strong smelling deodorant isn’t a good thing for me – I’ve found that the more fragranced they are the more I smell when I sweat. I think the fragrance mixes with my sweat and creates a stronger mix of smells. Everyone will be different of course, as we all have different body odours but for me I think the less fragrance the better.
In order to apply this you take a pea sized amount rub it together with your thumb and finger and then spread it on your underarm. Simple. And it really is! As mentioned above I always thought that pots of deodorant would be messy but this one is super easy to use. The deodorant itself is super creamy and doesn’t take long to warm up with your fingers. It doesn’t separate or pill, so there’s no chance of it all falling on to the floor and once applied it dries within seconds. It leaves me with smooth, nourished and dry underarms. I’m not left with much excess on my fingers and what is left easily rubs off once I wipe my hands together. I also find I can get dressed straight away, as it doesn’t leave any residue on my clothes. I have had a tiny bit of stinging when I applied it straight after shaving my armpits, but that was only once and I’ve not had it again since.
I find that it really does keep odours at bay for me, even when I’ve been to the gym which is where it usually all goes wrong. Once I get on the treadmill in the gym and start really sweating is when I usually start to find that natural deodorants just don’t cut it. I’m not adverse to sweating of course and I hate the mainstream deodorants that want you to stop sweating altogether, but when your deodorant is making your sweat smell worse then it kind of causes a problem! The last natural deodorant I was using was great in the day, but it had a strong smell to it and when I got sweaty it would amplify the smell of my own sweat to create a floral/sweat hybrid – not pretty! You’ll be pleased to know that I haven’t had any of these problems with this one though and that makes it a firm winner in my books. I come out of the gym smelling of nothing really, maybe the smallest hint of vanilla and I don’t cringe anymore when I need to do shoulder press when there are other people within smelling distance of me!
The only downside of this is that it’s pretty big and heavy to travel with, but so are most pots of deodorant and I won’t let that put me off buying it again. Luckily I don’t carry my deodorant around with me and if I go on holiday I can always decant some into a smaller tub, so it’s not a problem for me personally. I’m really happy with this deodorant and I’m hoping that this is THE ONE! It stops any nasty odours, it doesn’t irritate my skin and the ingredients are all natural. It certainly seems to be THE ONE so far, but I’ve only used this for a couple of weeks, so I’m hoping that it will still be the case in a few months. Fingers crossed!
